Marriage is a very huge step that two people can take which is why a lot of people are very hesitant to make such a big leap. For some of those who are in a serious relationship but are hesitant to take the plunge, living together first is their logical solution.

Although not as widely accepted by a lot of people, a growing number of couples are taking the route of living together instead of getting married. If you are undecided whether to live together with your partner before marriage, below are some of the advantages and disadvantages of this setup.

Advantages

  • Find out how it is to live under one roof with each other. Whether you decide to buy a house for sale or rent a condo in the Philippines, the important part is that the two of you will live and stay together in one roof. You will learn all about each other’s habits, quirks, and eccentricities before deciding whether you want it to continue for the rest of your life.

  • Not permanent. One of the most common reasons why some people choose to live together over getting married is because it is not permanent. There will be no legal problems if and when the couple decides to go their separate ways.

  • Gradual transition. Living together before getting married allows a couple to gradually transition towards married life. They can adjust to being more present in each other’s lives without involving issues often involved with marriage such as getting along with in-laws and legally combining assets and liabilities.

Disadvantages

  • Not looked at in a good way. In many different cultures, living together before any kind of matrimonial ceremony is not looked at in a good way. This can cause other people to look at your relationship negatively.

  • Decreased anticipation for marriage. Since living together will give you a preview of what married life will be like with your partner, it diminishes the anticipation you might have felt had you decided to get married first.

  • No legalities. Although this can be an advantage in some cases, it can also be a great disadvantage especially if you have been living together for a long time and you have invested a lot in the relationship, emotionally and financially. Because no matter how long you may be living together, you do not matter legally to each other if you are not legally married.
